When you want to upload files in UNIX from your home computer or download files from UNIX to your home computer then you would need to download and install either a SFTP or FTP program so that you can easily handle the file transfers. If you know the names of the machines and the login names and the passwords of the two accounts where you want to transfer the files for the purpose of either uploading or downloading then you should use SFTP. For the purpose of using the SFTP you have to download and install that program on your computer which has internet access.
After installing the SFTP you should connect one account to another and then you can either upload the files or download the files. The command that you need to give for upload is “put” and for download you need to give the “get” command. Also with SFTP you can easily transfer multiple files at one time but you cannot copy an entire directory hierarchy at one go. Another way in which you can do the uploading and downloading of the files, is to use the FTP program for Windows that is WS_FTP. For doing the uploading or downloading of the files in UNIX via FTP, you need to connect to the UNIX server via FTP. You should use the login id and the login password that was given to you. After you have logged in, then you will find yourself in the home directory of your UNIX server so that you can select the files for downloading or for uploading. Use the ASCII mode for transferring the text files and Binary mode for transferring the binary files. Also in most FTP clients you would get an “Automatic” transfer mode and if you click on this the FTP client will automatically decide which file transfer mode you should use for uploading or downloading the files.
