Roffaelo Sanzio is an Italian painter andarchitect, and is better known to world Raphael.He was born on April 6, 1483 in Italy. He is also the youngest of the famoustrilogy of the 'High Renaissance,' consisting of the legendary Michelangelo andLeonardo da Vinci. He was one of thefinest artists of his times who attained great heights in the world of art withhis stunning range of oil paintings, wall art and crafts that astonished thework with details and perfection. He had by his side the very influentialsocial circle that also helped him into his stint as a famous painter. At a verytender age of eight years, Raphael lost his mother. His father, Giovanni Santi,a painter by profession, taught him art and was influential in introducingRaphael to the world of arts. After the death of Santi's in the year 1494,eleven-year-old Sanzio was left under the guardianship of his stepmother.
Raphael was always very keen to polish hisart skills as in the year 1499, he moved to Perugia to learn from the legendaryartist, Perugino. Raphael was lucky enough o get his first task during histraining itself, that too in less than year i.e. in 1500. He painted"Baronci," an altarpiece for the church of Saint Nicholas ofTolentino, in Città di Castello. After the completion of his four years oflearning in 1501, the everyone began to refer him as a "master."Sanzio's high status helped him bag the task of painting the "Coronationof the Virgin’ for the Oddi Chapel in the Church of San Francesco, during theyear 1503. Inspired by Perugino's 'Giving of the Keys to St Peter,' Raphaelpainted, "The Marriage of the Virgin”.
Raphael's painting style was somewhatsimilar to that of Perugino. This fact lies to the concept that they bothemployed like method, such as oil varnish medium, shadows, thin, and deep huedgarments, to mention some which made their works look somewhat very similar toeach other. Following years saw the rise of Raphael to a great extent as he wascommissioned for the best of works at the most famous church, palaces whichgave a lot of exposure and knowledge about him to the world.
Since 1508, the artist chooses to stay atthe Vatican all his life. Despite being engaged Raphael chose not to marry allhis life. He passed away early in 1520, on his 37th birthday, which was also anauspicious day of Good Friday. He left behind the vast legacy of hismasterpieces, which included, in addition to numerous cartoons & designs,printmaking, fine art prints, drawings, a series of easel paintings, wallposters, canvas prints including a "portrait of Julius II" and thefamous "Sistine Madonna.
