So you’ve worked hard and gotten your business idea out of your imagination and into the real world. You’re ready to put a logo with your name and spread it among the masses. But the wrong logo, believe it or not, will make or break your reception among consumers.
So what are the top logo designing mistakes by designers? Ultimately anything could turn out to be a flop, and any aspect done improperly can ruin the whole job, but there are a few key flubs people tend to make.
The most common mistake is making the logo too complicated. Think of the logos for big-name companies. Macintosh computers have an apple. They don’t even have it with rainbow colors anymore. Their rival, Microsoft Windows, has four colorful squares. MacDonald's has a yellow ‘M,’ Nike has a check, and Facebook has a capital F in a blue square. The ultimate example, some would say, is H&R Block, representing themselves with a green square. The images are simple but distinct. They are recognizable immediately and offer no confusion as to whose product they are. Too often amateur designers will try to cram every product or service they offer into their logo. Simple shapes and crisp lines capture attention and will be remembered.
Color choice is the next big error to be made. Top-tier logos typically have only one color, and usually it’s either a primary color or black. Two colors is also common, but beyond that you tread dangerously. First of all, it’s less confusing for the beholder to take in. An important second not is that it’s much cheaper to produce things with fewer colors when you get them printed.
Let’s throw in one more quick stumbling block: avoid a logo with a ‘modern style.’ Using a trendy color set or art style will look good now, but will seem outdated quickly, which is a turnoff to consumers.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help with this step of your business. A proper logo will attract customers and embed you in the public’s mind.
